The Earl of Sandwich

Your St Andrews experience is far from complete if at the end of four long years, you still haven’t taken the time to properly indulge in a Butler’s wrap. Easily one of the best delis in St Andrews, Butler’s offers something markedly more enticing than one of Gorgeous’ slightly greasy paninis or Mitchell’s depressingly malnourished looking sandwiches. Whilst I wouldn’t go as far as to say they’re the next best thing to sex (although the mess and the occasionally disappointing lack of filling go some way to explaining this similarity) they are without doubt the best option lunch-to-go option St Andrews has to offer.

However, seeing as we’re wallowing in the pit of a global financial crisis, it only seems fair to suggest a couple of lunch-time alternatives which will keep you on track for your daily deli fix, without you having to sell one of your kidneys to pay for it. Here are a selection of sandwiches you can make yourself, one for every day of the week, most of the ingredients for which can be picked up from Tesco or any of the greengrocers or cheesemongers in town. Welcome to Owl Eyes’ week in sandwiches!

Day 1: 'The Classic'

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough olive loaf
> Parma ham
> Haloumi
> Sweet, sun-blushed tomatoes
> Baby spinach leaves


Day 2: 'The Piggie Back'

Ingredients
> Ciabatta (lightly toasted)
> Pork medallions (seasoned with some coarse salt and pepper, fried in oil)
> Horseradish mayo (it’s as simple as it sounds, just mix horseradish sauce and free-range egg mayonnaise in the small jar or bowl)
> Rocket
> Granny Smith Apples (finely sliced)

 

Day 3: 'The Walnut'

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough olive loaf
> Brie
> Clear honey
> Walnuts
> Rocket

 

Day 4: 'The Roasted Goat'

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough multi-seed loaf
> Goat’s cheese
> Red peppers (oven roasted)
> Rocket

 

Day 5: 'The Falafel King'

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough baguette
> Falafel (warmed in the oven)
> Baby spinach
> Tzatsiki
> Chilli jam

 

Day 6: The Hangover

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough multi-seed loaf
> Oak smoked bacon
> Brie
> Maple syrup

 

Day 7: 'The Finale'

Ingredients
> La Brea sourdough baguette
> Goat’s cheese
> Halkidiki green olives
> Tomatoes (oven roasted)
> Baby spinach
